About the Project
Potentia Renewables Inc. is proposing the Southern Springs Solar Energy Facility (the “Project”) through an affiliate, Southern Springs Solar LP. The Project is a 100-megawatt (“MW”) solar project on 510 acres of privately owned land located approximately 8 kilometres (“km”) southeast of the Town of Coronach, Saskatchewan. The Project will consist of ground-mount solar PV modules on single-axis trackers, inverter stations, internal access roads, underground collector lines, and a step-up transformer station.
The Project site was selected for its proximity to the interconnection point at the Poplar River Power Station and its potential to minimize environmental impact. Southern Springs has been selected as a preferred proponent in SaskPower’s recent Request for Proposals, and the Project will now move forward into development. Further details are available here.
Community Engagement
We hosted our first open house on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at the Coronach Community Hall. We have had the pleasure of meeting local community members and receiving valuable feedback and comments from the attendees. Display boards from the open house used to present various topics of Project information can be accessed here.
We are looking forward to continuing the conversation at our second open house, taking place on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, once again at the Coronach Community Hall. The Project team looks forward to meeting with local community members and receiving valuable feedback and comments from attendees.
Project location
The Southern Springs Solar Energy Facility is located approximately 8km southeast of the Town of Coronach, in the Rural Municipality of Hart Butte (No. 11), Saskatchewan.
SaskPower issued a Request for Proposals, due March 14, 2024 and anticipates awarding (i) one 100 MW Power Purchase Agreement with one Successful Proponent for one 100 MW AC Solar Generation Facility, or (ii) two 100 MW Power Purchase Agreements with different Successful Proponents, each for a 100 MW AC Solar Generation Facility.
SaskPower identified the south-central region in Saskatchewan as a target area for their current electricity procurement. SaskPower is committed to achieving a net-zero greenhouse gas (GHS) emissions power system by 2050 or earlier. To achieve this, they are adding more renewable energy sources to meet future supply needs and to reduce GHG emissions.
The Southern Springs Solar Energy Facility was selected as a preferred proponent in this competitive process and will now move forward into development. The Project will represent a significant increase in solar production in Saskatchewan, adding an additional 100 MW to the existing 83 MW of solar currently being produced in Saskatchewan.
The Southern Springs Solar Energy Facility (the “Project”) hosted its first open house on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at the Coronach Community Hall. The Project team was there to meet with the local community face to face, provide information on the Project, and receive comments and feedback from the community members.
Display boards were placed around the room to present the following information to the community:
- Project location, generation technology, and infrastructure
- A map of the Project Area
- Additional information on Project infrastructure (bifacial solar PV modules, ground-mount systems, inverter/transformer stations, interconnection)
- Community benefits the Project can bring, including a local economic boost, more opportunity for local employment, clean electricity generation, and a Community Benefits Fund
- An explanation of the SaskPower Request for Proposals (RFP)
- Currently surveys: environmental and cultural heritage
- Future studies and submission to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment
- An overview of general construction steps
- Preliminary project schedule
- Planned consultation activities for the future
- Project Manager information and general contact information
If you did not have a chance to drop by the open house, you can still share your thoughts and contact us by email at info@southernspringssolarproject.com. The Project is in the early stages of development and we welcome your comments, questions and feedback.
